Private Equity: GC specializes in making equity investments for long-term capital appreciation. GC also engages in active trading where temporary distortions in the marketplace reveal unique opportunities that would yield significant returns on investment. GC typically invests in companies that have high growth prospects and offer superior fundamental value. GC is a proponent of value investing and focuses on companies that have durable competitive advantages in the marketplace or that offer unique services that possess strong fundamentals. GC engages in direct purchases of enterprises where it determines that those enterprises are valued below their intrinsic fundamentals. GC’s core industry areas are:
- Financial Services
- Solid Minerals and Mining
- Energy (Oil/Gas and Power)
- Real Estate, Travel and Lodging
- Food Processing
- Communications, Media & Entertainment
- Health Care
GC always undertakes a comprehensive study before making an investment decision. GC asks a lot of questions before making a decision. Key questions include:
- Does the company have a durable competitive advantage?
- Are the company’s products and services of good quality?
- Is the management of the company peopled with managers of unquestionable integrity?
- What is the cash flow situation?
- What are the prospects of the company business wise?
- What do the income statements, balance sheet, cash flow statements, return on equity (roe) and dividends look like?
Corporate Advisory Services: GC’s Corporate Advisory arm specializes in consulting activities which include: Reorganization and Restructuring services for public and private sector institutions, Strategy/Business Planning, Mergers & Acquisitions, Due Diligence and Value for Money Audits. GC may identify a private sector institution that will yield significant returns on investment if properly structured. GC typically focuses on companies with a compelling story that offer goods or services desired and valued by the marketplace. GC may opt to target that company for acquisition purposes via a Leveraged Buy-Out. It may also choose to acquire the company outright and then reorganize it to maximize value for shareholders. GC may engage in stock arbitrage by investing in corporate sell-outs, reorganizations, mergers and spin-offs. GC is currently involved in the on-going privatization process taking place in Nigeria and will seek to engage in transactions either through advisory work, as it has done with the Bureau for Public Enterprises in the past, or through the acquisition of enterprises at the right price. GC currently provides consulting services to several public and private sector organizations. Current engagements exceed twenty.
Commodities Trading: GC’s Commodities Trading arm focuses on the buy and sell of major commodities that are in high demand in the market place. The strategy GC uses is to focus on commodities that have a high demand but are in short supply. GC takes advantage of the distortion to fill in the gap at a commensurate yield. GC studies the market to determine which products are needed or may be in short supply in specific parts of the market and then works assiduously to get those products from the producers to the buyers of the products. Some of the commodities GC trades includes: Perishables (Beverages and other products in the similar category), Rice, Beans etc. The whole idea is to buy low and sell high and to take advantage of the arbitrage opportunities presented in the marketplace.
Leveraged Buy-Outs/Acquisitions: GC’s LBO/Acquisitions Group specializes in the acquisition and operation of mission-critical solutions and services companies. Working with strategic sellers, we execute swift and certain transactions requiring custom solutions that range from corporate divestitures to public-to-private opportunities. We then create value and build market leaders through organic and strategic growth of our portfolio. GC executes seamless transactions with a customer-centric, employee-committed philosophy, providing management expertise, strategic direction and leadership to our portfolio companies. GC does not acquire companies with a predefined exit strategy but rather we focus on the entry strategy.
Corporate Finance: GC’s corporate finance group focuses on sourcing funds for companies that need bridge and/or long term funding for projects or companies. GC typically focuses on companies that have a sound management made up of people with integrity, intelligence and energy to ensure that the funds are deployed effectively. GC carefully analyzes the companies to ensure that they are uniquely positioned to generate enough cash flow to retire the capital invested. GC also brokers financial transactions between parties acting as financial adviser to both parties. GC continuously explores unique financing alternatives that are useful to the marketplace and yield maximum value to shareholders.
